An evening with Viola Dacus

Viola Dacus, mezzo-soprano, has performed regionally as a recitalist as well as in opera and oratorio venues.  She has performed with such organizations as Baton Rouge Opera, Ohio Light Opera, Mississippi Opera, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, members of the Louisiana Philharmonic, and the Manhattan Philharmonic in a performance of Verdi's Requiem at Carnegie Hall.  She has performed concerts throughout the Southeast as well as in Israel, Jordan, and Greece.  With the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in 2011 she performed Reflections in the Mirror of Childhood, a song cycle composed for her by award winning composer James Sclater.  More recent performances include a recital of Schubert Lieder, Mississippi Opera's "A World of Opera" Gala Concert, Handel's Messiah with the the Starkville/MSU Symphony, and Benjamin Britten's Phaedra with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.  Upcoming performances include The Old Maid and the Thief with Mississippi Opera, Handel's Messiah, an all Cole Porter program, and Brahm's Liebeslieder  Waltzes on the James S. Sclater Chamber Series.
Dr. Dacus received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Mississippi and her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees (both in Vocal Performance) from Louisiana State University.  The subject of her doctoral monograph was the songs of German born composer Felix Wolfes.  She continues to promote his lieder in both recital and lecture recital formats including presentations at both the Texoma and the Southern Regional Conferences of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.  She is currently President of the Mississippi Chapter of NATS.

Dr. Dacus has served on the faculties of Phillips University in Enid, OK and Oklahoma State University, as well as having held interim positions at Southeastern Louisiana University and Louisiana State University.  She joined the Mississippi College faculty in 2001 and is currently Part-time Instructor of Voice.

Overheard frequently at downtown's hot live music venue, Underground 119: "This doesn't feel like Jackson."  Maybe it's more accurate to say that this basement club/restaurant is redefining what it means to go out at night in the central business district.  The venue has some of Jackson’s best live music Wednesday through Saturday (ranging from jazz to bluegrass to blues and more), plus a stylish decor (featuring blues-themed artwork by Patterson/Barnes) and a tasty tapas menu. Underground 119 draws a diverse crowd with a healthy mix of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and it's almost always packed on the weekends.
