Pyracantha

 PYRACANTHA

Pyracantha is a genus of thorny evergreen large shrubs in the family Rosaceae, with common names firethorn or pyracantha.  The plants reach up to 20 feet tall. The seven species have white flowers and either red, orange, or yellow berries (more correctly pomes). The flowers are produced during late spring and early summer; the pomes develop from late summer, and mature in late autumn.

We have a large pyracantha bush beside our house, and it has grown as tall as the house.  I have been watching the green berries and branches whip around in the wind and hit the side of the house from my second-story window in the computer room for over a month.   Yesterday I happened to look out, and the berries had seemingly overnight all turned this beautiful orangey-red.  In the afternoon sunlight they were the color of a fiery sunset!

Piper the cat was so curious as I walked around the yard taking pictures.
